iGetter

iGetter is Safari’s download manager replacement. Doesn’t take up too much resources and is easy to use. It greatly improves your download speed by using segmented downloading.

ImageWell

This lets you easily and quickly add features to sites created in iWeb that would be difficult to add without this utility. This is the dig for the iWeb developer. Embed HTML in your iWeb pages and finally have those flash animations, applets and google ads on the website.

iWillQuit

This is sure to save your laptops hard drive. If you have a network in your house, schedule it to download files at night so as to not slow down others using the network or to keep your VOIP working without delay. Apple’s scheduler will not shut down/sleep while there is an internet radio stream, but iWillQuit does. iWillQuit works just as it said it does, shuts down, sleeps, etc.

Linotype FontExplorer X

Font sorting, font shopping and font discovery are now more fun than ever. FontExplorer X gives computer users all the font functions they could need, and lets them decide how deeply they wish to dive into various font themes.

MainMenu

Max

Max is an application for creating high-quality audio files in various formats, from compact discs or files. Look nowhere else to meet your needs in handling a wide range of codecs and other audio tools. Sbooth, the developer, is the leader of a community that cares deeply about high-quality audio on the Mac, and he has forums that are a key site for knowledge about Mac audio.

MenuMeters

MenuMeters is a set of CPU, memory, disk, and network monitoring tools for Mac OS X.

Namely

A very good application launcher that is really easy to use, doesn’t need much resources, and doesn’t get in the way when you don’t need it, which is nice. Namely is actually faster than Spotlight in application launching and you can choose your favourite aqualicious color too so it matches the Spotlight menu or your desktop very nicely.

OnyX

It allows you to run misc tasks of system maintenance, to configure some hidden parameters of the Finder, Dock, Dashboard, Exposé, Safari, Login window and of some of Apple’s own applications, to delete caches, to remove a certain number of files and folders that may become cumbersome, to see the detailed info of your configuration, to preview various logs and CrashReporter-reports, to check the Preferences files and more.

Perian

With Perian, the Swiss Army Knife for QuickTime, any OS X application that uses QuickTime can now use all the other common media types like DivX, XviD, mpeg4, AC3 audio, etc.

PTHPasteboard

PTHPasteboard is one of those applications which expands the functionality of copy and paste. It does this by allowing you to copy many things without having to paste them straight away; making good use of multiple ‘pasteboards’ which store everything you copy. Using this application means you never have to worry about losing anything you’ve copied ever again!

Service Scrubber

Wouldn’t the services menu be much more useful if it weren’t overcrowded by services you never even thought of using? With Service Scrubber, you can restructure the services menu, change service keyboard shortcuts or disable services. It also lets you deactivate, activate, reorder, rename and redefine the keyboard shortcuts for all the entries in the services menu. It does this in a way that is pretty much foolproof so you can always revert.

SharePoints

SharePoints is an application or a preference pane that makes it easy to add and delete share points like in the old Finder. In Mac OS X, by default, you are limited to sharing only what is in your public folder in your home directory. This program makes it easy to share any folder. In addition SharePoints also brings back users and groups management to Mac OS X as well as easy configuration of AppleFileServer (AFS) and Samba (SMB) Server properties.

Sizzling Keys

Sizzling keys allows you to control iTunes with keyboard shortcuts from any application. Pause, adjust the volume or skip a track without leaving the current application. Far more efficient than using iTunes itself. As well, one is generally using a lot more keyboard shortcuts when on the go anyhow.

Skim

Incredible great software for PDF reading. The new version is almost perfect certainly in the field of full screen reading and presentation. Easier to use as a viewer than Adobe Reader. The ability to attach notes is an added bonus.

SlimBatteryMonitor

This application is excellent! It cuts the menubar space by half and is easily customizable. For example, you can easily change the color of the icon outline from black to blue. It is suggested to move the application from the desktop into the Applications folder before installing.

SMARTReporter

SMARTReporter is an application that can warn you of some ATA hard disk failures before they actually happen! It does so by periodically polling the S.M.A.R.T.-status of your hard disk. S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) is a technology built into most modern hard disks that acts as an “early warning system” for pending drive problems.

smcFanControl

Keep your MacBook about 15 °C cooler than when it isn’t running. When the CPU is taxed, Apple’s controls take over and the fan speed increases according to Apple guidelines, but when it is running normally, you can set the fan at a faster speed to keep your system cool. A great little program that is very unobtrusive, easy to turn on and off at will.

Springy (StuffIt replacement)

Springy archiving and compressing application let you do all your work with archives and compressed files using a graphical interface similar to Finder. Features include browsing files in archives in all three view types (as icons, as list, as columns), extracting all or particular files or folders from archives, modifying archives (add, delete, replace, rename files or folders in archives), full drag & drop support, working with encrypted and password protected files, support for HFS/HFS+ metadata and resource forks, compressing and decompressing files and many more. Dragan Milic, the developer, is pretty responsive. Just leave your issues and you will get addressed in a short time.

SuperDuper!

Exactly duplicate your hard drive. The clone is even bootable. The interface explains clearly what’s going to happen so that you can be sure that you are doing what you want to do. Runs both on Intel and Power PC Macs! Taking into account its clear interface, excellent functionality, and informative documentation, I consider SuperDuper! to be a must-have utility for Mac OS X.

TextWrangler2

TextWrangler 2.0’s text-handling operations are swift and precise. The ‘Text’ menu holds an array of time-saving commands. This version of TextWrangler is a boon to coders and system administrators. It gives you direct integration with the Unix scripting environments of Perl, Python, and shell scripts. This version has improved syntax coloring for a plethora of structured languages and file formats. The program also now sports a powerful AppleScript dictionary.

TinkerTool

TinkerTool is an application that gives you access to additional preference settings Apple has built into Mac OS X. This allows to activate hidden features in the operating system and in some of the applications delivered with the system.

Transmission

A lightweight yet powerful BitTorrent client whose simple, intuitive interface is designed to integrate tightly with whatever computing environment you choose to use. Transmission strikes a balance between providing useful functionality without feature bloat. Furthermore, it is free for anyone to use or modify.

Unarchiver

The Unarchiver is a replacement for BOMArchiveHelper.app, the small application that handles archives by default in OS X. However, unlike the default archive helper, this program has a very impressive list of supported formats that it can work with. These formats range from very common ones, to some of the most obscure.

UNO

UNO is a theme that brings the sunken unified toolbar/titlebar look & feel to every single window on your system (metal or aqua, and already unified windows as well).

Vienna

Vienna is a freeware, open source RSS/Atom newsreader for the Mac OS X operating system. It provides features comparable to commercial newsreaders, but both it and the source code are freely available for download.

VLC Media Player

VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, etc) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.

WhatRoute

WhatRoute is designed to find the names of all the routers an IP packet passes through on its way from your Macintosh to a destination host. It also measures the round-trip time from your Mac to the router, thus enabling you to determine slow links or hops in the Internet. WhatRoute can also find dead links, such as routers that don’t respond.

Yahoo Messenger

The ONLY Mac messenger at the time of writing that can consistently do video chats with people who aren’t using Macs. iChat and AIM seems to be very fickle with cams. Plus, since YIM and MSN now interact happily, it’s easy to cam for anyone on your MSN or YIM lists.

Know that spyware has overtaken viruses as the largest online threat, infecting 90% of internet connected PCs. It’s important to be aware of the risks that spyware poses. Spyware can be classifies into 3 different groups.

Severe Threat – Spywares from this group is the most dangerous of all. They log user keystrokes, which means everything that the person types is gathered. Imagine yourself typing ‘paypal.com’. Surely the next thing that is logged would be the username and password. Imagine the pain for losing all the money in paypal. 15 out of 100 computers infected belong here.

Moderate Threat – Installed programs, internal IP address, OS version, the existence and versions of service packs and security updates and TCP ports the spyware is listening to are some of the data sent across. Though it is less risky that the severe threat group, it’s still bad. It’s like having spycams around the house. 25 out of 100 computers infected are in this group.

Minor Threat – commercial-value information about the end user’s browsing habits are collected. This is like a supermarket installing a spycam in your kitchen, to know what you have and don’t have, so that they can knock on your door and present you with the right stuff that you are missing, with the likelihood of you buying it. 60 out of 100 infected computers lie in this group.

Spywares not only steal personal information, they also :

consumes resources on your PC which disrupts workflow.

causes PC crashes

interferes with the web browser, slowing it down and causing downloads to fail. It can even hijack the browser to redirect you to sites containing unwanted contents.

annoy you with annoying popup ads that fit your preferences from the information gathered.

costs you money if your internet service provider charge you by the hour.

Here are 15 commonly used programs distributed with spyware. Seriously, be very careful.

Bonzi Buddy

Dope Wars

ErrorGuard

Grokster

Kazaa

Morpheus

RadLight

WeatherBug

EDonkey2000

Sony’s Extended Copy Protection involved the installation of spyware from audio compact discs through autorun. This practice sparked considerable controversy when it was discovered.

WildTangent

AOL Instant Messenger – it is still bundled with Viewpoint Media Player and WildTangent

DivX – prior to version 5.2

LimeWire – prior to version 3.9.3

FlashGet – before being converted to freeware

Do you know that spyware removal tools won’t remove spywares that are bundled with non-spyware programs? The reason is because there is a clause in the terms and conditions which prevents them from being removed, unless the non-spyware program is removed together with it. I believe 99% of us don’t read the t&c. I don’t. I’ll just keep clicking next until the installation is finished.

Ad-aware and Spybot are the 2 most reliable FREE anti spyware that I have tried so far. They have been doing their job well. I’d recommend those 2, if you haven’t got any.

Do you get sore and tired hands from using the mouse so often? Well, mine does. 6 to 8 hours of writing articles for my 3 blogs is more than enough to sore an arm joint. It was worse when I was working for my previous company, handling the redesigning of the entire web portal by myself. There was a lot of pointing, dragging and dropping activities with the mouse.

It’s actually important to take preventions before carpal tunnel syndrome hits. I would love to switch to another OS that has lower mouse needs, but because I’m a hardcore gamer and several hardware pieces of mine are unsupported, I have to stick to Windows for the time being. Anyways, below are 2 common methods that you and I can take to run programs faster and minimize mouse use.

Use Windows Shortcut

This is the best shortcut method for anyone who is using Windows. We can bind ‘ctrl’ + ‘alt’ + 34 other keyboard keys to programs that are used often. However, it has to be in the Start Menu. Here’s an example on how to bind shortcut keys to Windows Calculator.

Mouse over to :
Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Calculator > ‘right click’ > ‘Properties’.

Click on the ‘Shortcut’ tab and look for the ‘Shortcut key:’ field. In this example, I hit down the ‘ctrl’ + ‘alt’ + ‘L’ keys together and press ‘OK’.

You’re done! Pressing the ‘ctrl’ + ‘alt’ + ‘L’ keys will now bring out the calculator. Avoid the hassle of having to point here and there to get to the program that you want.

Seriously. I have bound shortcut keys for several common files and folders such as ‘bittorrent’ folder (yeah, you can also bind folders but a folder shortcut needs to be placed in the start menu), Firefox, Winamp, Filezilla, MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, ‘Programs Uninstaller’ and a few others. The time taken to set up short cuts is well worth it.

Use Launchy

Thanks to Josh who has started developing Launchy since 5th of March 2005. It’s small in size and free. It takes up a mere 7MB of memory to run. Users can easily hide / unhide the text box by pressing ‘alt’ + ‘space bar’. Below are 3 common commands of Launchy that I find useful.

Run Desktop Applications

Type in application name and get a list of files that match.

Search Google

Type ‘google’ > press tab > type search query > hit Enter

Check the Weather

Type ‘weather’ > press tab > type city / state > hit Enter

Launchy
Open source keystroke launcher

Get access to a computer from any other workstation across the internet. It can be a home computer accessing a work computer or vice versa. Users can do everything as usual. Surf the web, use a program, download stuff from the internet onto it or even print documents remotely. Though RemotePC works for any host application it recommended that a broadband connection such as DSL, Cable or T1 be used. The reason is to keep connections alive, fast and easy.

If you’re on Windows, you’d be wondering ‘Why use RemotePC? Windows already has Microsoft Remote Dekstop’. Well, here are 2 main differences:

For remote access outside the local network, Microsoft Remote Desktop requires a permanent IP address whereas RemotePC does not require static IP addresses.

Microsoft Remote Desktop takes time, knowledge and patience to set up whereas RemotePC does it in a minute.

There is a notable feature about RemotePC called the ‘Desktop Sharing’ feature. It enables users to share their computer with multiple people. So everyone, including friends or colleagues may gather around the shared computer and have a productive online conference. It’s like watching a presentation from the comforts of home. Actually, users accessing the remote computer need not have a RemotePC account. Just a ‘Guest License’ and permission from the remote computer’s owner is all it needs for users to enjoy the benefits of RemotePC. Professionals especially the ones working in the line of health care and help desk technicians will find RemotePC highly useful.

Free Monitor for Google is free web promotion software designed for search engine specialists and webmasters. With it, you can find position of your web site in Google Top for popular keywords and get more traffic from Google. Google Monitor will query Google and show you the position of your site by your target keywords and also how well your competitors are doing. It keeps statistics for several URLs and several lists of keywords. You can even add notes. Below are the 3 notable features of Free Monitor for Google.

Monitor Website Ranking

For each keyword, Free Monitor for Google performs a query to Google and shows its rank in the Google index. You can choose the way to perform the query: either the default method (just like in a browser) or via the Google Web API. Free Monitor for Google stores your best position for each keyword and the current trend: whether you have risen since the last search or fallen down.

Additionally, Free Monitor for Google shows the top positions in Google for each keyword (see the right part of the window on the screenshot above). By default, it shows top 10, but you can change this to anything you like.

Track Multiple URLs

One of the convenient Free Monitor for Google features is that it can check the web ranking of several URLs.

Free Monitor for Google keeps the results for each URL separately from others, which allows you to check rankings of several websites independently.

Work Through Proxy

You can make Free Monitor for Google work through a proxy to increase the speed, cache results or bypass country-specific restrictions. There are four proxy options: proxy host, proxy port, username and password. The first two are required (unless you decide to work without a proxy). The username and password are only required for those proxy servers that require authentication.

A lead management system helps track closed sales, leads generated, advertising campaigns, website traffic and revenue. Lucky for interested organizations, AIMpromote lead management has the most features in the industry by far, and is priced less than the leading competition. AIMpromote is easy-to-use, has no setup fee, and is flexible enough to meet the needs of every business. They help increase profits in all industries including mortgage, automotive, and telemarketing. I did some comparison to others in the competition and saw why AIMpromote dominated the market. Below are 6 useful features of the software :

Lead Attention Meter

An average of 80% of sales lead is missed because of neglect. The Lead Attention Meter will show when a lead needs attention or how close the sale is to being lost due to a lack of response. Administrative tasks such as this will reduce the need for sales staff and keep them from closing that next big sale.

Reports

Get real-time reports on how well each advertising campaign is working and how well each sales representatives is performing.

Lower TCO

There are no setup fees, and the people at AIMpromote will integrate the software into clients’ systems free of charge. The high usability and low learning cure will keep sales representatives working efficiently.

Customization

If an organization is interested in mortgage lead management, they will tailor the system specifically to the mortgage lead management needs of the organization. It is a fact that no two setups are ever exactly the same. The reason is every business have their own needs and their own business process. There is absolutely no charge to customize the AIMpromote system to meet every client’s needs. Furthermore, clients are encouraged to take advantage of the efficiency that can be gained by a properly configured system.

Full Featured 14 Day Trial

Allowing every sign up to try a full featured system is the best form of trial. Testing out a new system for 14 days, clients are able to decide for themselves on whether the software fits their needs or not.

Competitor Comparison

View the competitor features and pricing comparison chart. The difference between the LeadsROI and Leads360 with AIMpromote is vast.

I’ve been using Joomla v1.0 for my blog for the past 5 months and find that it is still in it’s baby stages. There were several issues about Joomla that just didn’t make it as a blogging platform. I had difficulty because

I cannot tag my posts

once I label a post as archive, it will no longer appear in the main pool of posts

I tried finding but still cannot place advertisements in between posts

I have to install a third party component to enable users to leave a comment

I have to insert html code manually to include ads in the posts

No doubt the support I got from the forums are helpful but it is not enough. The frustration I face during days when Joomla prevents me from doing what I want to do just spoils the rest of my day. Enough is enough and so I decided to migrate Joomla to wordpress.

Firstly, a million thanks to Rodney Blevins for making it possible to move Joomla to WordPress. Thanks for making the Mambo2Wordpress Import Wizard that made life easier for me. Now I’ll contribute back by detailing my steps.

The import wizard made by Rodney was actually meant for Mambo (a previous name for Joomla). However, after several modifications, it was Joomla compatible. You can find the download link to my modified version at the end of the article. Below are the steps I took.

Tested on :

Joomla CMS v1.0.12
Wordpress 2.1

Install WordPress and create a folder in the root called ‘export’.

Update the config.php file with your own database names, mysql user name, password and host name.

All my tables had a ‘jla_’ prefix in the front

So if your tables have a different prefix, eg. ‘abc_’, then just search and replace ALL ‘jla_’ with ‘abc_’ for the index.php file.

Upload index.php and config.php to the ‘export’ folder in the root of your website.

Surf to http://your-wp-installation/export and follow the steps to import your articles or links into WordPress.

You’re DONE!

DISCLAIMER : Use it at your own risk. I have tested it a lot on my own server and it works, which does not mean it will work for you as well. It may break your website accidentally. ALWAYS make sure you have a working backup before attempting big scale stunts like this.

Update 2009/01/04 : Fixed broken download link

Update 2012/02/24 : If the script above does not work for you, try these WordPress plugins instead.
